Move Over

on June 11, 2014

Image In my opinion, the human resource department of most corporate hospital environments only support one response to discord, disappointment, or disagreement, and this is what it is…emotional detachment.

What they don’t, and have never understood is that when we humans emotionally detach — ignore our independent spirit, our intuitive nature, and only nod mutely in agreement because we have been told collectively that we are replaceable — we are detaching from EVERYTHING — not just the urge to speak up and have our voices heard, we are letting go of the passion for what we do and the idea that we CAN make a difference.

Nursing in particular is all about caring, and if you think a patient can’t tell when you don’t really care, you are crazy. Hmmm. Let’s check those patient satisfactions scores after a month of having zombie nurses walking around with a fake smile plastered on their faces.

So, then anyway… what has HR accomplished? This is what they’ve done — they have spent $15,000 to $18,000 to bring you on board, made you feel kind of special for a short period of time because they picked you out of all the candidates, then slowly started to remind you that yes you are a part of a pack, but it’s a pack of sled dogs, and you are tethered behind nine other dogs. Behind them.

I’m digressing

We are staring at pixels, checking our phones for imaginary messages, or if you’re a nurse, stepping over to the stretcher not to ask the patient if they need anything extra, but to ask them to move over and make room.

Holding it in is more tiring then letting it out and we need a place to lie down.
