Don't Curse the Nurse!

A Question

obamacareI know the primaries are the obvious focus of news right now, but there is still a thought I am throwing out for any feedback:

In general, is there less discussion about President Obama’s Affordable Care Act because people are distracted or apathetic, or is it because it hasn’t turned out to be such a bad thing after all?

Dear President Obama,

Dear President Obama,

I finally have an opinion.

I read that part of your Affordable Care Act includes giving 1.5 billion over the next 5 years to the NHSC, an agency that assists healthcare providers with loan repayments and scholarships for furthering education. Part of the incentive includes contracts to work in NHSC built community centers set up in areas with limited access.

On the one hand, this is admirable. But, and I can say this because I am a nurse, I work in the hospital, and also volunteer at a Christian based free medical clinic, my gut tells me you are throwing money around without looking to see where it lands.

I understand that the National Health Service Corps has been around since the 70’s. Here is their mission statement:

“The National Health Service Corps builds healthy communities by supporting qualified health care providers dedicated to working in areas of the United States with limited access to care.” http://nhsc.hrsa.gov/corpsexperience/aboutus/missionhistory/index.html

Ugghhh

Most of the money is marked for building new sites, oh, helping pay off loans, and giving scholarships.  How about more advanced equipment? Classes for the 25 million diabetics (per the CDC, a number which will double in the next forty years)? Prenatal care that includes more than two visits and a handful of brochures on nutrition ?Lower rates on pharmaceuticals?

Don’t enable young healthcare professionals with gifts of loan repayment. We can figure that out. We went into a profession that requires proactive thinking.

Just give us the tools we need to do our jobs better.

Sincerely,

Susan
